What is an ebook?

An e-book ("electronic book", but also "ebook") is the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book. This "ebook" document can be read either on a computer or on a dedicated hardware device known as a reader e-books.

He also can be printed on physical paper for greater ease of reading, or to be re-forwarded via the Internet to another user or via a CD, a floppy disk or a USB key.

Formats Once the written work, there are a multitude of formats for editing. Each has advantages and each has its drawbacks: for example, PDF and ZIP formats are the most common.

Advantages N # 1: The ebook has far less need of physical space required to store the work of the writer. Hundreds of ebooks (if not thousands!) can be stored together on a single support. Indeed, 500 e-books of average size can be transported on a single CD (equivalent to several shelves of a real bookstore)

N # 2: The text can be searched automatically into a list via a search engine ( eg http://www.homebiz-publishers.com/ebooksresearch.htm)

N # 3: Readers who have difficulty reading classic books can easily increase the size of the characters on their screen and therefore improve their readability.

N # 4: The e-books can be read in low light, or total darkness.

N # 5: An ebook does not need to be kept open as a pocketbook so it can be much more pleasant to take. In addition, the reading on the screen allows you to read your hands free.

N # 6: Replication of ebook costs nothing. Copies can be made immediately and in large quantities. This allows backups. It also allows us to lower the price to a minimum compared to the price of the physical book (price = paper cost + printing cost + transmission and distribution costs)

N # 7: This impression + copying digital distribution allows to avoid 95% of adverse effects on the environment because:
-- No destruction of forests for paper manufacture
-- No discharge of pollutant wastes during the manufacture
-- No release CO ² during distribution
-- No paper to recycle end-of-life physical book

N # 8: The ebook is available instantaneously, the reader can begin reading without the need to travel to bookstores or wait for delivery.

N # 9: Errors and updates can be done directly in the text, by the writer or publisher without the need to re-print the entire paper book.

Drawbacks:
-- It is clearly necessary to read an ebook on an electronic device (a PC, for example) to receive and allow playback. Moreover, we must also install the necessary software allowing decryption and reading the ebook. (This software is generally free)
-- Certain publihers attach to the books they sell Restricted Transfer Rights from one device to another, which prevents duplication free but certainly, the change of personal device to another one.
-- Indeed, for the publisher, there is a risk in the sense that his ebook can be easily hacked or distributed without the permission of the publisher. For the ease with which electronic documents can be copied means that if a single document is not protected, it can be used to reproduce an unlimited number of perfect copies.

Production:
The e-books corresponding to existing books already published in the past, are produced by scanning physical documents, sometimes with the use of automated scanners with the technology to quickly scan the books without damaging the original. The scan produces an image file, which must then be converted to text format through a program of ROC.

The ebook can also be created directly from manual typing on a keyboard and then inserting illustrations and digital images. The publishing industry of electronic books has an annual rate of growth to 2 digits. It follows the curve of installing new PCs in the world and also for the connection of new Internet users.

A digital library or "elibrary" or "online bookstore" is a library whose collections are in digital formats and accessible by computers.
